Simple Church Taster 2023

April 4 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Simple Church team invites you to come on a journey with us. It will begin with exploration of the Simple Church concept, and will build into a space for learning and discovery. It will culminate with an opportunity to discover how to begin the process in your own setting and commit to the process of starting a Simple Church.

Let’s wind back to the earliest space in this journey: the wonderful chance to taste something.
Taste it and contemplate the possibilities.

Each year, the Simple Church Taster event introduces a models of fresh expression of Church to help us explore the missional characteristics and purpose in Simple Churches. Simple Church Taster 2023 will introduce a model of “Couch Church” through Empowered Faith Community. Couch Church is a model that builds and encourages faith-based groups with people in the margins.

On Tuesday, 04 April, you are invited to join the Simple Church Taster event on ZOOM. We will be joined by Mark Matthews, National Manager for Empowered Faith Communities. Mark has worked in the social welfare sector of Melbourne for 30 years. He holds Diplomas in Social Science and Business and is trained in providing professional supervision and counselling and is experienced in community development. Since 2007, Mark has been responsible for the ongoing development of the COACH Community Mentoring program. Mark has developed the frameworks of Empowered Faith Communities (EFC). He team leads an EFC in Rosebud (Victoria) that is offered to people who don’t feel they could easily fit within a mainstream church, empowering them to become agents of influence and change in their own social space. Mark will be speaking to us on the theme of Mission in the Margins.

More About Our Speaker
Mark is co-author of the book, Ordinary Mentoring for Extra-ordinary Transformation.

Employed by the Crossway Baptist church in Melbourne, Mark is the co-author of COACH Community Mentoring and co-founder of Empowered Faith Communities. Holding qualifications in social science and business, Mark is trained in providing professional supervision and counselling.

Mark has worked in the social welfare sector in both secular and Christian communities for over 35 years, leading teams of social work and health professionals along with church communities, to deliver support to families and individuals who experience significant life challenges.

COACH Community Mentoring is an international program that currently equips and mobilizes volunteer mentors to offer long term, goal focussed support to vulnerable and disadvantaged families in their local community.

Empowered Faith Communities are open to people who have life issues that result in them feeling they may not easily fit within a mainstream church. This form of church runs in a Community Development model with a strong and overt discipleship culture.

Mark Pastors an Empowered Faith Community in Rosebud, Victoria. This community equips homeless people to learn that that can “be and bring the good news” to others in their social space, resulting in homeless people leading other homeless people to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.

These outcomes are now being seen in other similar communities around Australia that Mark is coaching.
