Gambling Reform

Gambling Reform

The Public Engagement Group of the NSW/ACT Baptist Association has joined the Pokies Play You Campaign – an alliance of groups that is seeking to raise awareness of the damaging impact of poker machines in our communities, and to call for measures that minimise the risk of gaming.

Would you join us? We’ve outlined 5 simple but effective actions that churches can take in our Pokies Play You Action Guide for churches

The Bible calls us to be wise stewards of the resources God provides. People who suffer from an addiction to gambling find it almost impossible to do this, resulting in significant impacts on their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their families. We must consider both how we can help people with a gambling problem and also challenge those who would exploit them.

Gambling is one of Australia’s favourite recreational pursuits. Australians lose $21 billion each year to gambling. 52% of these losses are derived from poker machines.

Estimates indicate that approximately 15%, or 95,000 people who play pokies suffer from a serious gambling problem, and 40-60% of losses on poker machines come from people seriously harmed by gambling.

We’re not calling for the abolition of poker machines, just a series of simple reforms – like changes to the design of poker machines and the introduction of maximum bets – designed to minimise harm to those who have a gambling problem.
