Pastors eNews - August 2019
Welcome to your August Enews! It’s a bumper edition this month with everything from useful resources to events coming up to equip and strengthen your ministry, updates on current public issues, and of course our Assembly and Annual Accreditation Service coming up on Saturday 7 September at Thornleigh Baptist Church. There’s also an update on the drought from Steve Gaut, our regional minister in the western districts of NSW.
For many of us this is ‘planning season’ as we seek God for his priorities for us and the ministries we lead into next year. I regularly need to remind myself that my job as a leader is not to ‘create’ the way forward, but to ‘catch’ or discern what God’s way forward is, and be obedient to it. The processes for doing these 2 things may look similar in many respects – strategic planning meetings, budgets, collaborative planning, dreaming about the future. But for spiritual leaders the starting place will be our overarching responsibility is to prayerfully listen to God and others, leading the community of His people into his plans and purposes.
As you plan, may you sense his strengthening and guiding hand on you and your ministry!

Resource Corner – Adaptive Leadership & Board Governance Training
One of the increasing requirements of leadership in our age is the need to lead churches and other organisations through unchartered territory. And as we all know, leading faithfully and effectively in the midst of significant change is challenging! The Adaptive Leadership paradigm, championed in Ronald Heifetz’ book a decade ago, continues to be relevant. (See here for a useful short article on Adaptive Leadership)
A more recent title Canoeing the Mountains by Tod Bolsinger adapts these principles for specifically Christian contexts and is a worthwhile read.
Training Opportunity – One-Day Board Governance Course
More and more Christian organisations are realising the strategic value of investing in Board Training. Professional Development is no longer just for paid personnel: the laws are tightening, the tolerance of mistakes is disappearing, and the buck ultimately stops in the boardroom.
But governance not just about compliance!
Those in the boardroom have more opportunity than anyone else to steer the ministry towards its mission! It’s a tremendous privilege, but weak governance can seriously hamper your efforts to achieve something for God’s kingdom.
Invest just one day in preparing your church or ministry board for the year ahead! Learn what you need to know about governance, and how to build an effective board, from experts who work in and understand the nuances of the Christian sector.\\\\
Dr Gary Hoag will be anchoring the days by building from his latest book, ‘The Council’, which explores the four councils in Scripture as a basis for ministry governance. There will be other plenary sessions, a hypothetical, a plenary panel, and eight electives covering everything from board culture, external conduct standards, directors’ duties, Ministry Governance 101, and much more!

Foundations for Coaching
Coaching is the process of “coming alongside”. Cultivate Coaching exists to glorify God, in partnership with the Holy Spirit, to develop and equip a network of Christian coaches – people who empower others (and those they serve) to release their God-given potential.
This 2 day training course provides many immediate and ongoing opportunities to engage with the principles and practices of coaching through discussion and peer practice. It builds on the foundations for healthy coaching and mentoring discussed in the Introduction seminar, reintroduces the GROW coaching model, and gives attendees opportunities to develop and hone their coaching skills through practice. Attendees will develop intuitive listening skills, learn how to ask powerful questions, and practice helping others convert ideas to actions.
An essential component of this training includes a HeartLife profile. HeartLife gives insight into why we behave the way we do and provides opportunity to journey with God and others for continual growth and lasting transformation. This will need to be completed online between the training days
This is for you if:
– You’ve never been coached, but would like to learn
– You are an experienced leader or mentor who would like to see the people you serve, better access the gold God has entrusted to them
– You have been coached, and loved it, and want to learn to do this for others
– You want to support, encourage and motivate others to discover and do the tasks God has planned for them, through easy and hard times

This year, we will be reminding our federal leaders of these concerns but also putting focus on the wellbeing of children in our nation through the launch of a new BaptistCare Australia report. We will focus on how Australia can better respond to children living in poverty, the systemic disadvantages facing many Indigenous children and the uncertain future for children in a world where the climate is changing.
Would you join us in prayer for this important event? Please pray that we would speak with clarity, passion and purpose. Pray that God would be honoured in all that we say and do and pray that the hearts and minds of our federal parliamentarians would be soft and open to our asks.
