Pastors eNews - December 2018

Welcome to the December 2018 Pastor’s eNews

Hi, fellow pastors and leaders,

I pray this newsletter finds you well and that Christmas preparations are going well. I have put together a short Pastor’s eNews to bring to your attention several key pieces of news.

Steve Bartlett | Director of Ministries

Coordinator of Pastoral Accreditation and Recognition appointed

I’m really pleased to let you know that Rev Jenny Casey has been appointed to the role of Coordinator of Pastoral Accreditation and Recognition. This new 3 day per week role will be part of the Gen1K Leadership Development Team in 2019 under the leadership of Rev Grae McWhirter. The role will oversee all aspects of accreditation and recognition of pastors in conjunction with the Committee for the Ministry.

Jenny will commence in this role in early February, 2019.

Jenny has made a fantastic contribution as Secretary to Assembly Council and Administrator for the Continuing Accreditation Programme since commencing in those roles in 2015, and more recently also standing in as my temporary EA. Her contribution and commitment in these areas will be greatly missed but we look forward to the new way she will contribute to the life of our movement.

Please join me in congratulating Jenny on her new role!

Welcoming our “New” Prayer Coordinator

Some more great news – Carolyn Altman has agreed to re-engage as Prayer Coordinator with our Association. Carolyn will fulfil this role as part of her LetsTalkPrayer ministry (http://letstalkprayer.com/). So, welcome (back) Carolyn!

PRAY@1102 in 2019?

It’s been wonderful to see the engagement with the PRAY@1102 initiative over the last year, as people from churches all across NSW & ACT have engaged with a rhythm of prayer each day for God’s Kingdom to come. Literally thousands of people have used the PRAY@1102 tools to focus prayers around renewal and revival in our lives, across our churches and our movement. Several hundred people have been receiving daily reminders on their phone or email.

As we come to the end of 2018 we will be wrapping up this organised aspect of PRAY@1102 and look forward to further new initiatives in prayer in 2019 (stay tuned!). But that doesn’t mean you can’t still ‘Pray at 11:02am’ next year. Some of the flyers and bookmarks are still available from the Ministry Centre and you can adapt for your personal or church needs as desired.

Thanks to all who have been part of PRAY@1102. Let’s keep praying!

Farewelling Viv Grice

As many would be aware, Rev Dr Viv Grice finishes in his role as Team Leader of our Association’s Leadership Development Team on 12th February 2019, after a decade of wonderfully committed and effective service to our movement.

Some pastors have asked how they can have opportunity to express their appreciation to Viv. If you would like to do this you are invited to participate in a book of thanks that will be prepared for him. Please email your thoughts, thanks and encouragement to Ros Allibone at rallibone@nswactbaptists.org.au by Friday 18th January and it will be included in what is presented to Viv as he finishes in his role.

Religious Freedom update – a long week in Canberra

You received an email from me last weekend regarding proposed changes to the federal Sex Discrimination Act that had been hurriedly introduced into the Senate. On the face of it, the bill has the commendable aim of preventing religious schools from expelling students only on the basis of their personal sexual orientation. In practice, our religious schools do not seek to discriminate in this way anyway and all are in agreement that this change should be made. However, in effect the proposed bill goes much further than this, raising significant questions of religious freedom not only for schools but all training institutions (including theological colleges) and churches and other religious communities.

In short, the government and the opposition continued to be unable to agree on the bill and with the support of some crossbenchers it has been sent off to a senate committee for further consideration. This means it will not return to the house until early in 2019.

Thanks to all who have been praying about this over the week. We would love to see the release of the Ruddock Report into Religious Freedom and a constructive and holistic discussion take place about a legislative response. Please keep praying for this process and for wisdom for all who are engaging with our politicians on these matters in the times ahead. I encourage you too to make contact with your local MP about these matters.

Baptist Insurance Services Update – Refund and Persons of Concern Reserve

In October churches received notification of a refund coming from Baptist Insurance Services, as for legal reasons they needed to dissolve their reserve to support churches with Persons of Concern. Churches may elect to receive this refund in cash, but all churches have been asked to assign this refund to a new Persons of Concern Reserve in the books of the Association so that our support for all our churches that may find themselves needing to access this in the future could remain.

Thanks to those who have responded to this already with your instructions, especially to those who have allowed their refund to go into the reserve. This is a reminder that the last date for providing instructions regarding this back to the Association is 31 December 2018. After this date all refunds will automatically be applied to the Persons of Concern Reserve.

If you have questions about this please contact Jonathan Bradford (jbradford@nswactbaptists.org.au) prior to Christmas.
