As we gear up for 2019 I’ve been reminded of the words in Hebrews 10:23: “Let us hold tight without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.”  We minister in the light of Jesus’ resurrection and the sure and certain hope of the future.  It’s a hope that transforms not only how we look to the future but how we minister in the present.

This year may we all know that hope in Christ deeply and lead others to it!

Pastors & Leaders Morning + BUILD - 20th February 2019

Come to the 2019 Pastors and Leaders morning and be inspired in your calling, connect with other leaders and be equipped in your ministry!

This event is for people at all stages of their ministry, and whatever their roles. Whether you’ve only just stepped into leadership or if you’re much further along the path, we encourage you to come and be a part of a morning set aside to minister to YOU!

This event continues to grow year by year, and connecting face to face is part of what makes it such a great opportunity each February. However, if you live out of driving distance to Sydney, the morning will be webcast.

At the Pastors and Leaders Day this year we will be encouraged by quality input on developing leaders in the local church, developing a discipling culture, and strategies for self-care across the different seasons of ministry. We will hear about The Gathering – our major event in 2019 – and also our special event with international leader Jo Saxton in the middle of next year. We will converse, pray, sing and eat together. We hope you will come and be a part of this time with other pastors and leaders in our movement!

BUILD — Building resilience in times of transition — The church in the west finds itself in a place it has never been before, in transition from what it was in the past to what it needs to be in the future. The world we are living in today is very different from even a generation ago and the ways of the past won’t be the way of the future. While many agree that the church needs to change and leave behind the ways of the past, what the church will become in the future is not yet clear. Between the ending of the old and the beginning of the new is the time of transition. It’s in transition that we learn who we are, what we need to let go of, and what we need to hold on to. The task of the leader is hold the church in transition and it will take leaders high resilience to lead in this time of transition. Join us for Build. The Gathering - Our New Event - 2nd May 2019

‘The Gathering’ is your Association’s new major event building on the incredible feedback received from the 2018 ‘Celebrate 150’ event. It is an opportunity to gather together and celebrate our movement of churches.

We want ‘The Gathering’ to grow you. To grow your heart for God and all He has called you to. To grow your passion for your local ministry and mission. To grow your connection to our tribe and what we can achieve together.

Position Vacant - Executive Assistant and Assembly Council Secretary

The Association of Baptist Churches in NSW and ACT is seeking to discern God’s leading for the appointment of an EA to the Director of Ministries and Secretary to the Association’s Assembly Council.

The role is a permanent full time senior administrative position with two main focuses: providing advanced administrative and secretarial support for the Director of Ministries and governance and administrative support to the Association’s Assembly Council and Assembly.

The successful applicant will have high level organisational and administrative skills and a strong understanding of the corporate environment. They will possess an understanding of Christian ministry, especially within local churches, and a keen desire to employ their skills in a highly committed, purpose-driven team. They will have strong team work ability and the capacity to relate positively across a diversity of people, organisations and stakeholders. They will have a wholehearted commitment to the beliefs, values and mission of the NSW & ACT Baptist Association.

Drought Relief

It is fantastic to report that almost $250,000 has been raised since the appeal was launched last year!

The effects of the drought are ongoing and impact across many areas of our state – North-west, New England, Western, Riverina, and then also some areas you might not immediately think of, eg Far South Coast, where dairy farmers are facing significant hardship as the price of feed has skyrocketed.

If you are a pastor in a regional area where people are being impacted by the drought, you are invited to consider how your church could apply for funds to support people in your wider community who are being impacted. A number of our churches have already done this which is great but funds are still very much available.

If you are in a church in the western region – Steve Gaut the regional minister has info for you, please contact him. If in Riverina, David Strong at Wagga is coordinating. If you are in another region, please contact Heidi Tak at our office directly for information on how to apply for and distribute funds.

Thanks also to those of you who have taken a lead to raise funds in your own church for this ongoing need.

The Graham Tour

Sixty years ago, Billy Graham shared “the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39, ESV)—the only message that can change lives for eternity—with people all over Australia.

This February, Franklin Graham, Billy’s son, will share that same message in six cities across this country during the Graham Tour.

Will you plan to invite your loved ones and friends who are far from God and then bring them to the Graham Tour stop nearest you?

These free events are a great opportunity to share God’s love with your family, neighbours and co-workers who don’t know Him.

Global Interaction

Melanie Wellings and Andrew Palmer are currently leading a small team of young adults on a Global Xposure trip to South East Asia, returning at the end of January.

Applications for the next intake of i68 are now open! i68 is a discernment space for young adults who want to explore what it means to be called to, and formed for, cross-cultural mission over a period of two years.

Rev John Lane

It is with sadness that I advise that Rev John Lane passed into the presence of the Lord in the evening of Thursday 17 January 2019 – he was 75 years of age.

John was Born in Australia on 28 October 1943. John served as an Accredited Baptist Minister in Lawnton (now Rivers) 1970-73; Toowong 1973-76; Nambour/Yandina 1976-80; Ingleburn 1980-88; Belmont 1988-93; Dungog 1994-2000; Cardiff 2000-01; Wondai 2002-08; and was the Area Coordinator for Burnett 2004-07. 

The funeral service will be held later this week.

We’re excited to tell you our Christmas outreach video, The Other Story, has been a great success reaching 27,000 people through social media over the recent Christmas period! Your support of the Easter Offering in 2018 enabled us to make this video with Will Small from Narrara Valley Baptist Church, and share the real story of Christmas with so many people, so thank you again for your support! Pastors Survey - Reminder

Thanks to all pastors who have so far completed the third wave of the National Baptist Pastors’ Health Survey. We have almost reached the numbers we need for State-specific feedback, but we still need just a few more participants.

Youth Pastors and Emerging Leaders Conference 5-7th February

The Youth Pastors and Emerging Leaders Conference is 3 days designed to support and equip leaders in our Baptist churches across NSW and ACT.

It is an intentional time focused on building relationships, fostering community, praying together, sharing of ideas and resources, inspiration, and refreshment, with and for, youth and young adult ministry workers and younger leaders from all over NSW & ACT.

It’s about calling leaders and emerging leaders up to all that God wants for and from us for the year ahead and into the future.

Community Engagement Design Lab - 13-14th February & 10th April

Do you:

  • Feel disconnected from your local community and are looking for new ways to engage to make Jesus known?
  • Need support or resources to help think through how you can effectively bring kingdom-shaped change in their community?
  • Have existing community programs that are a strain on the church or have lost their connection to the church’s mission?
  • Want to develop your understanding and skills in community engagement?

If so, the Community Engagement Design Lab is for you.  The program includes 4 days of intensive training, spread over 3 months, with guided engagement with your community in-between the face-to-face sessions. The Design Lab is run by John Beckett and Seed. John is a Consultant to the Association and leads our Public Engagement Group. Seed’s specially developed curriculum brings together the best thinking from the fields of community development, theology, design, social enterprise and social change. 

By the end of this training you will be able to:

1) Use a clear framework for community engagement to explore missional opportunities
2) More clearly define your community, its needs and your place in it
3) Draft an initial strategy outlining possible priorities/approaches to community engagement in your context

The full cost is $1200 per church.

The cost covers all training, resources and meals for the face-to-face sessions for up to 2 participants from your church.  Subsidies are available for churches who are not able to afford the full cost of the training.

Children & Family Ministry Connect - 2nd March 2019

Children & Family Ministry Connect is a morning of community, input, resource sharing, ideas and refreshment!


Saturday, March 2nd in 11 locations across NSW and ACT.


Alstonville, Berry, Cranebrook, Canberra, Dubbo, Epping, Gymea, Narrabeen, Narara Valley, Parkside, Taree and Wagga Wagga.

Children & Family Ministry Connect is for everyone who works with children in our churches, both paid and volunteer, through Sunday kids programs, mid-week Kids’ Clubs, Playgroups, Holiday Programs or intergenerational ministries.   The theme for the morning is “Welcome”, and we are excited to welcome back Richard Black, the founder and Managing Director of Strength to Strength as our main speaker.  There will also be practical workshops and resource sharing, as well as time for personal and team reflection.  We will connect for part of the morning via live video link, while other parts will be facilitated locally. 

The cost is only $10 for everyone who registers before Feb 18, 2019.  What a great opportunity to invest into the volunteers who serve in these significant ministries at your church by enabling them to attend this training together.  We believe that it will be a wonderful opportunity for your team to connect, learn, evaluate and be refreshed.

Sydney Alliance - Public Engagement on Affordable Housing - 14th March 2019

As you are aware, Baptist Churches throughout the country have spent time during 2018 advocating for more affordable and social housing so that women, children and men leaving violent homes have a safe place to live.  We now have a chance to join in an event to ask our politicians to make concrete commitments in this area. You are invited to attend a Housing Assembly in Town Hall on March 14, 2019.  March 14 is nine days before the next NSW election.  Join 2500 leaders and citizens to stand together for the common good. Together we will be seeking clearconcrete commitments on affordable housinghousehold energy and fair rental laws from both state and federal politicians seeking your vote.

As you may know, the Baptist Association NSW & ACT partners with the Sydney Alliance on several initiatives to help make Sydney a more welcoming and liveable city for all.  Sydney Alliance, Vinnies NSW and the Everybody’s Home Campaign are jointly hosting the Assembly.  This is a wonderful chance to be involved in civic practice and to advocate in a very public way for a cause that we have already put a lot of effort into.  We are hoping to have at least 100 Baptists attend.

Intentional Interim Ministry - 20-22nd March 2019

Intentional Interim Ministry is a process for a church to improve the church’s health in the interim between permanent pastors. The “intention” is the intent of the church to employ the process. The first training session of the year is Interim Ministry for Today’s Church.
