Welcome to the Pastor’s eNews

Hi fellow leaders and pastors, and welcome to a short(ish!) March eNewsletter.

A number of times in recent weeks I’ve been in conversations or meetings where someone has shared about when they first met Jesus, or were challenged to follow him in a life-changing way.  It’s always an encouragement to hear people speak fervently of these milestone experiences – the place; the date; the sense of God’s clear voice and the conviction of his Spirit.  Often these experiences are remembered and marked years or even decades later.

This year we are celebrating a significant milestone in our faith journey together.  This year our movement turns 150!  So, we are stopping to celebrating this, and also creating space to look to the future with energy as we continue to press into the vision God has put before us.

That’s what Celebrate150 is about!

Celebrate150 is a once-in-a-generation event that will run in place of our Revive gathering in 2018.  It will begin over dinner on Thursday 17th May and that evening’s programme will include our Annual Assembly.  Then on Friday 18th we will gather for a day of inspiration and equipping, culminating in a final celebration rally for all ages in the evening.

It will be a massive celebration!

But Celebrate 150 is not just about the birthday.  It’s where we gather to meet with our tribe, to be inspired by how God is at work across our movement.   We will be challenged and equipped in our walk of faith, and engage with some powerful questions: Who does God call us to be going into the future individually and collectively?  And will we live that out, to His glory, in our generation?

The venue for Celebrate150 will be Le Montage, a fantastic venue on Iron Cove Bay in Sydney’s inner west.  It has plenty of onsite parking and easy access by public transport from the CBD.

http://www.celebrate150.org.au/ is the online home for all the details of the event and also details of accommodation options and billeting opportunities for those of us outside of Sydney.

Can I encourage you to come, to share the opportunity with your church and invite people to come with you.  Celebrate150 will inspire and challenge us to live for Christ in our changing times – celebrating our story but fixing our eyes on Jesus as we look to the future with faith and hope.

Of course, we are now also a week or so out from Easter.  Thank you in anticipation for all the leadership you will give in your local church context over this season as we remember with gratitude and joy, Jesus’ death and resurrection.  I and the team at the Baptist Association are praying for you and your church over this time; that many will be encouraged in their faith or be led to consider faith in Christ.

FORM: Evangelism & Church Planting Conference

We believe that new churches are the fruit of announcing and demonstrating the good news of Jesus, gathering believers, making disciples, and empowering leaders. Form is a two-day festival of ideas, storytelling, masterclasses, networking, team building and much more. It exists to see individuals, culture and churches formed in/with/through Christ by inspiring, connecting, equipping and sending passionate followers of Jesus. For more info www.4m.org.au

Baptist World Aid Australian – Australian Fashion Report and Ethical Fashion Guide

On April 22nd Baptist World Aid will release its latest Australian Fashion Report and Ethical Fashion Guide.  This year marks the 5th year of the report and five years since the Rana Plaza Factory collapse, a tragedy that claimed the lives of 1,100 people.

Each year, the Ethical Fashion Guide goes from strength to strength.  It captures the interest of Christians and non-Christians and is helping to shape how we consume, giving us the information we need to support the companies that support their workers.  More companies have been engaged this year than any previous year.  It is an excellent resource and a tool that churches can use to connect with their local communities.  And it’s all for the glory of God!

The Public Engagement Group is encouraging churches across the Association to help launch the guide and get involved in the fight to end worker exploitation in the supply chain.  There are some great options for church participation this year including a:

  • Simple launch: a 5-minute time slot during a church service to call the church to shop differently and to give away the guide
  • Full-service launch: a 5-10 minute launch segment plus time to do the “Who makes my clothes?” simulation game.  You can invite your wider community to church via a letterbox drop.
  • Community event: Host a screening of True Cost, have a clothes swap, or play the “Who makes my clothes?” simulation game

Can your church set aside some time around April 22 to promote shopping ethically?  Register to be a part of the 2018 Ethical Fashion Guide Launch today!  Visitwww.baptistworldaid.org.au/ethical-fashion-launch-registration to register or to find out more about the range of ways your church can be involved.  There are free resources available to help you with your event.
