Have you been wondering what your church can do to raise awareness of domestic violence? Last November, Mortdale-Oatley Baptist Church ran a community issue event focused on domestic violence. Carolyn Cousins, from Tuned-In Consulting, and Bruce Chan, from Baptist Community Services in Bankstown were the guest speakers, with about 75 people attending. Both speakers have extensive experience dealing with domestic violence, trauma and neglect.
Carolyn outlined the seriousness of domestic violence in Australian society, and the history of the various legal and educational attempts to reduce it. She explained how the Christian understanding of God’s image in people, and the love of Christ, formed the basis of Christian opposition to all forms of violence, fear and intimidation in relationships.
Bruce shared from his own experience running recovery and education programs, particularly the changes he has seen in men who had been perpetrators of domestic violence.
Mortdale-Oatley Baptist Church has run a series of community issues events and they have been very well received. They would encourage other churches to run one and raise awareness and discussion of important community issues.
Thanks to Mortdale-Oatley Baptist Church for sharing their story with us!
